Telecel launches range of branded mobiles

Telecel Zimbabwe has launched a new range of branded phones, becoming the second operator in the telecommunications sector to do so in less than a week. This follows a similar move by Econet Wireless, which launched its branded phones under a promotion which started last week.

There is cut throat competition in the telecommunications sector in the country as the service providers are coming up with various promotions aimed at attracting or retaining subscribers.

Under the Telecel promotion dubbed ‘Juiciest Deal’ a subscriber would get a phone, sim card and US$10 worth of airtime.

The cellphnes are the M-Tech brand with built in memory, colour screen, infenion chip, FM radio, games and alarm among other things. This package costs a total US$50.

The phones are on sale nationwide and Telecel has warned customers that they should be wary of dealers who may try to charge higher prices.

This is one of the downside of all the promotions which have been launched in the country as some unscrupulous dealers try to cash in on them and charge very high prices.

A cursory look at the outlets selling the phones shows that there is a very wide representations of all areas.

Telecel has divided the five regions from where customers may buy the phones and these are national, central (covering Harare, Marondera, Chivhu, Kadoma and Mrewa), Midlands (comprising Gweru, Gokwe, Kwekwe and Zvishavane), southern (which includes Bulawayo, Masvingo and also Zvishavane) and eastern ( that is Mutare, Rusape and Chiredzi). Such a geographic spread encourages the use of mobile phones even in remote parts of the country.
